Depression, treatment with incense prevents anxiety
The incense may be important in the treatment of anxiety and, consequently, to prevent possible states of depression. This is the conclusion of a multicenter study conducted by researchers at Josh Hopkins University in Baltimore and at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. According to data obtained so far, published in the journal The FASEB Journal (The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology - June 2008), a particular substance released incense burning can relieve anxiety and depression.
The substance useful for the treatment of anxiety is the frankincense, an incense made from the resin of Boswellia, a medicinal plant very common in Ethiopia, Egypt and Yemen. According to the researchers, incense acts on particular areas of the brain involved in emotions being able to alleviate depression and anxiety.
In one phase of the trial, the researchers injected some mice in a particular molecule in the frankincense, the incensolo acetate. After administration dell'incensolo acetate has been observed an interesting fact, the molecule Trpv3 increased the production of the protein, a protein found naturally in the mammalian brain.
Arieh Moussaieff, coordinator of the study conducted at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said the results indicate the incensole acetate and its derivatives as a potential alternative to traditional drug therapy to treat depression and anxiety.
Currently, researchers are not aware of the exact role of the protein Trpv3, some scholars believe may be involved in the ability to feel the heat and, according to current research, may also be responsible for the control of anxiety and depression.
Regarding the use of the molecule dell'incensolo acetate in the treatment of depression and anxiety must await the results of further research demonstrating the effectiveness on human beings. For the moment we can continue to use it in the traditional manner (burning), so also promotes relaxation and thus helps to alleviate the anxiety.
Although the "alternative medicine" the resin of Boswellia (incense plant) has proved effective as anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic (which inhibits the 5-lipoxygenase stimulates the production of leukotrienes), reduces pain and swelling and helps to restore a good joint function, remember that, to avoid unpleasant side effects, it is important to consult a homeopath. Particular caution should be even during pregnancy, given that the oil of incense is emmenagogue (a substance that increases the menstrual flow), it is preferable not to use it especially in the first three months of pregnancy.
